Here is an excerpt from an interview with Pravin Daryani on his journey, taken by Manoshi Sinha, Editor of My India My Glory online magazine.

Q. How did the idea about setting up Indian Institute of Learning and Development crop up in your mind?

Pravin Daryani: I had been an entrepreneur since the age of 19 helping my father in his dairy business. Later, I worked as a business trainer in the corporate before I ventured on my own. In my experience I saw 2 major challenges or gaps:

1. Many training companies were not able to deliver what Indian businessmen need because most trainers are motivational speakers who do not understand business themselves.

2. More importantly, people and training organizations have been focusing on front line sales professionals; mid & senior level business leaders and the likes. But these people are not decision makers. No training will deliver results if the trainees are not able to implement what they learn. And if they are not decision makers, how would you expect them to implement solutions?

That’s when I realized that I need to start coaching business owners. This is why I started Indian Institute of Learning & Development in 2013. Right from the start I was sure that I only want to focus on Indian MSME businessmen. Because in corporate, many times even CEOs do not have all the rights on decisions that the companies take.

Through IILD we assist Small and Medium Enterprises who want to grow and take their business to the next level. We do this through Trainings and Audiovisual products.

Q. How many individuals and entrepreneurs have been trained under your aegis till date?

Pravin Daryani: We have trained more than 16,500 individuals, including over 8,500 entrepreneurs across various industries. Industries ranging from manufacturing, engineering, automobile, healthcare to capital goods, electronics, garments, and more segments.

Q. Tell us about the Journey of IILD.

Pravin Daryani: We have grown from a 20-member team with just one office in Mumbai to 8 branches spread across the country. With our head office in Thane (Mumbai), we have presence in Hyderabad, Delhi, Andheri, Ulhasnagar, Indore, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana and Delhi. The team strength today is over 200, and it’s growing.

Q. What is the USP of IILD?

Pravin Daryani: The main USP of IILD is the implementation services that we provide with training. Right from the start, I was certain that I wanted to focus on results. Only implementation or skillful execution gives you results. We have handpicked best executors that make up our IILD Implementation team.

Q: Why do you feel MSMEs need guidance in business?

Pravin Daryani: India is at the cusp of a never-before-seen growth trajectory. Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, who contribute 40% to the Nation’s GDP, are at the center stage of this sweeping transformation. Opportunities are myriad. But MSMEs need to realign and recalibrate to gain from this sweeping transformation that is poised to change the economic and business landscapes.

This new world order in business will require them to prepare for change before they set out in the journey of ascent. Those who do not prepare will be left behind. This is where IILD comes into the picture. We can handhold them to overcome challenges and make the most of opportunities.

Q. You wear multiple hats. You have been a successful entrepreneur besides being a business trainer and now an MSME consultant. Can you please tell us about the other businesses under your group of companies?

Pravin Daryani: Our focus has been to take businesses to the next level. When we reflected on the work that we have been doing for the last 5 years, we thought what is the next level for us? We realized that the next level for the company was to look beyond training and start executing solutions at the client’s business. That’s what led the foray into consulting in 2015.

I founded the A&A Group of Companies which counts A&A Business Consulting, My Urban Co-operative Bank, A&A Food and Nutrition Pvt Ltd and IILD. The estimated worth of the group today is pegged at Rs. 155 crore.

Q. Can you tell us in brief about your flagship training programme SPEED+?

Pravin Daryani: It’s a 2-year programme for businessmen where they attend 1 day long module every 2 months. As I said before, implementation services are built into the learning and development model the company follows. So an Implementation Manager is assigned to each client who ensures that the learning imparted in the training module is implemented in the client’s business.

We also have Growth Multiplication Meetings as a part of SPEED+. Overall, we have 12 trainings (modules), 36 implementation meetings and 12 GMMs. We are the first coaching company in India to give guaranteed revenue growth in writing before the start of the SPEED+ programme.

Q. What is your vision for businesses that you help to grow and for India at large?

Pravin Daryani: Our vision is to assist individuals and organizations to grow. We want to craft the aspirations of millions of Indian MSMEs who want to take their business to the next level. That way we end up contributing to the nation in a big way because MSMEs contribute 40% of the GDP. The government has been relentlessly working on skill development programmes for MSMEs. We are doing the same thing.

Q. Your message to the entrepreneur community.

Pravin Daryani: My message would be that – Strive for creating a business which is beyond only selling products/services and making money. Add value to people’s lives. Think beyond balance sheets and EBIDTA.

And whatever you do, think of doing it fast. “SPEED” should be embedded in your business ethos. An organization that doesn’t gather speed in execution will gradually get wiped out of competition. Speed as a culture is the first thing an entrepreneur must embrace.
